All tables set and ready for patrons to fill. Upstairs at Bar Hortera, Latina Barrio, Madrid, March 2018.
Madrid, March 2018, La Latina Barrio, upstairs at Bar Hortera – I was too early to experience the night life at that fluo/glitter bar – Spaniards don’t even think about a night out until most of us are already in dreamland.
For this one, I still went heavy on textural accidents, but wanted to convey a feeling of a world-reality bubble.
From a quick stop in Burford, UK, around 2015, if memory serves.
Work started in 2015 – kept the wrinkled sky because I love the effect.
Part of my HIP series – for Hypertonal Impressionistic Painting – this quaint café in Budapest.
A painting started in 2015 and more or less finished in 2018 – Berlin in Winter impression, enhanced because the reality wasn’t nearly as interesting as this ;o)
Szimpla Kert is a romkocsma, which means ruin pub in Hungarian, located in the Jewish Quarter of Budapest. I fell in love with the place. The term “ruin” is not used lightly – the whole place, particularly this room, looks like it was taken over by deranged squatters.
For me, this door is irresistible. It’s got fairytale written all over it.
Captured this on a walkabout in Nafplio, a very charming and beautiful town in the area of Argolis (in eastern Peloponnese).
I only had a few days off from a short assignment in Athens and wanted a different taste of Greece. with the limited time and resources I had, Nafplio was a perfect fit. Very happy I made the trip.
My own particular, very subjective and surrealistic take on the Szimpla Kert ruin bar in Budapest. When I went there, it was love at first sight. This is one small area on the first floor of the romkocsma, (means ruin pub in Hungarian), located in the Jewish Quarter of Budapest.
Obviously a day capture. The night scene here is a different beast. The animations (quite a few if you look closely) represent how I see that place. I would definitely have made this pub my personal hangout if I lived in Budapest!
Guessing this was the delivery vehicle for the restaurant.
I loved the colour matching the exterior wall, and the red of the break and reflector lights matching the interior wall.
